Operating Model

The operation of Digiroad is based on the Road and Street Network Information System Act (991/2003). The Digiroad information system is owned, maintained and developed by the Finnish Transport Agency. The agency is also responsible for the disclosure of information from the system.

Digiroad is a collection of data gathered from several sources, including the National Land Survey of Finland, municipalities, the Finnish Transport Agency, as well as a few other authorities. The Digiroad organization does not create or edit data stored in the database.

National Land Survey of Finland

  • Geometry and address information – updated quarterly

Finnish Transport Agency

  • Attribute data on roads (road register data) – updated annually

Municipalities

  • Attribute data on streets, private roads maintained by municipalities, as well as pedestrian and cycle routes owned by municipalities

Other authorities

  • For example, data from the Helsinki Regional Transport Authority on public transport stops in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area

 

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has appointed the Finnish Transport Agency as the organization responsible for Digiroad.

 

Karttakeskus Oy is the operator of Digiroad. The company maintains the data and acts as the system administrator. The application provider is Tieto and the operating service provider is Logica.
