Digiroad contains the geometry and attribute data of streets and roads. It is currently the most comprehensive database on the Finnish road network, providing users with, for example, the following route information:
Official name and number of road
Position of road
Width and pavement type of road
Number of lanes
Speed restriction
Bridges and tunnels
Parking buildings and areas
Prohibited manoeuvres and vehicles
Width, height and weight restrictions
Bus stops
Cargo and passenger terminals
Addresses of houses
Attribute data are described in detail in, for example, the list of Digiroad data objects. In the list, information is presented in accordance with the Government decree 997/2003. The description of Digiroad data objects can be downloaded from http://www.digiroad.fi/dokumentit/en_GB/documents/.
All key data objects are updated in the system every few months. The objective is to update all planned new road and street projects in real time.
In Digiroad, each road or street is categorized in a functional class. Functional classes are used in all planning and operations related to the road network, such as route planning and navigation, as well as traffic optimization aimed at directing traffic primarily to preferred routes.
The functional class of a road or street is based on its significance to the flow of traffic. The purpose of the functional class is to describe the service level of route for traffic, as well as to allow traffic to be directed to preferred routes.
The following classes are used in the functional rating of routes:
STREETS | FUNCTIONAL CLASS | Public and private road |
Regional main street | 1 | Class I main road |
| 2 | Class II main road |
Local main street | 3 | Regional road |
Collector street | 4 | Connecting road |
Feeder street | 5 | Class I private road |
| 6 | Class II private road |
Cycle or pedestrian path | 10 | Cycle or pedestrian path |
In towns and villages, the main street can belong to the functional category 1, 2, or 3.
