Digiroad is a national database which contains precise and accurate data on the location of all roads and streets in Finland as well as their most important physical features (covering a total of 483,000 km or 300,000 miles).
The main strengths of this system include its full and comprehensive covarage and uniform presentation of the data, its relevant data content for the needs of transport services, and the obligation of authorities to update and maintain the data. The Digiroad Database provides comprehensive and up-to-date information for those who produce applications and services based on such data as well as for various authorities and agencies for the purpose of planning and service production.
The Digiroad project started in 2001 and the system was completed in December 2004. The Finnish Trasport Agency maintains and updates the data in the Digiroad system, and provides data services.
